Traditional mother-of-pearl work uses wood as its basis, which makes both forming it into a certain form and selling it as a product in the market very difficult. After several trials and errors of applying mother-of-pearl on various material, SIN DO ART found a solution in aluminum and eventually made various everyday utilities. The “Mother-of-Pearl Memo Box” has an aluminum body that serves as a storage for Korean traditional paper for taking memos or various accessories. Because the product uses aluminum instead of a metal part for bending, an innovative technology that has been patented, closing and opening the memobox proceeds smoothly without any stiffness. The product is durable as its memo papers are replaceable. It is a highly popular product as it can be used as an office appliance or presented as a gift. SIN DO ART is currently focusing on a method of using leather for the inlay of mother-of-pearl, a new frontier in the company’s perennial search for innovation.
