Overview

Looking at a wooden cup or other objects can certainly warm one’s heart. It is never an easy task to craft a wood work - it takes a lot of manual labor and needs patience and it can become a complete object only through multiple steps. But in one well-made woodcraft work, there is a delicacy, warmth and refined style that cannot be compared to anything else. Once varnished with lacquer, the wooden work becomes even more valuable. Painting lacquer is not an easy job. Once wood is carved into a certain form, lacquer is applied initially and dried for one day before it gets sanded. After that, cracks are filled in and other processes follow, including drying, sanding and re-applying lacquer. This whole process is repeated five times, which takes more than 15 days. The travel mug from Dachae, which is used every day, shows off a design that fits modern day usage but is created through a traditional method for lacquer ware, boasting a beautiful harmony of antique color and patterns. Lacquer can trigger a strong allergic reaction to skin so the hands of the artists are filled with scars. But the lacquer ware cup that has been dried for long hours shines with a smooth and glossy surface.
