Overview

The traditional Korean costume boasts dazzling yet restrained beauty that does not fall short of any other countries’ traditional costume. But documents on the traditional Korean costume are rarely preserved in its entirety so the costume designs that have been restored through historical researches are hard to find even in Korea. Aware of such problem, Park Jae-hyun and Cho Bu-hyun, co-chairs of The Mojaic, have travelled around the country to find historical documents on traditional Korean costumes and to establish their basic knowledge on traditional designs. Because some of the designs may come across as old-fashioned, they added colors often adopted by celebrated artists such as Andy Warhol and Gustav Klimt, which made the works appear more familiar to contemporary consumers. At first, they tried to restore the costumes for queens. Later their designs became more diverse as they developed costumes for kings as well. Words have begun to spread regarding their efforts. Recently, their works were used as a background at a concert stage during the ‘Korea’s Spring’ event in Nantes, France. In South Korea, the company’s design products _ a portable round mirror and a travel mug _ received a prestigious designation in 2017 given to outstanding cultural products.
