Overview

Wearing the traditional hanbok once or twice a year on special occasions is a refreshing experience that makes one realize just how comfortable it is. There is a sense of freedom in wearing hanbok that one cannot experience by wearing regular clothes. But the size and material of hanbok make it cumbersome to wear it on a daily basis. Lee Hye-mi, an active hanbok designer, addresses this issue with her series of modern hanbok that emphasizes traditional aesthetics while adapting the clothes to modern lifestyle. Among Lee’s new hanbok series, the dopojarak vest, inspired by traditional full attire worn by Joseon Dynasty scholars, is simple yet sophisticated. The vest is made from everyday material through a streamlined stitching process, which makes it very accessible to the public. Another notable work by Lee is her series inspired by a man’s coat with pleats underarm worn by military officials during the Joseon Dynasty. The straightened collars and breast-tie of her works retain the form of hanbok while making it comfortable for everyday wear.
