Overview

Oh Hyeon-joo, the CEO of BB Story who studied ceramic arts, attempted using soap instead of clay as her main artistic ingredient and ended up employing her skills in the making of porcelain-shaped soaps. But many consumers from overseas mistook her soap products as candles, and some even requested that she make porcelain-shaped candles. Unlike soap, candles do not undergo change in their shape as long as they are not lit. Oh’s candles are not only practical but also visually pleasing; thus they are ideal as gifts for tourists, and they can be used as ornaments, incense, and candles. Rather than going for the easy route by making a wax-candle in a case, Oh strived to create an artistic candle that combines traditional design with a modern motif. Oh’s “Peony and Vine Shape Porcelain Candle” is inspired by the Peony-and-Vine Shape Porcelain (Korea’s designated national treasure: No. 240). She manually sculpts the candles for the engravings of peony and vine on the surface. Instead of using paraffin oil, a cheap ingredient but unpleasantly odorous and low in quality, Oh prefers natural palm wax extracted from palm oil. Palm wax has a slightly rough and glimmering quality, making it an ideal candidate for bringing out the aesthetic quality of Oh’s works. The white soap has a bamboo tree scent, the gray soap lavender, and the blue soap citron. All of them have natural and gentle scents that gradually spread in a given room. Evoking the shape of porcelain, Oh’s works are especially popular among overseas customers.
