Overview
A 3D printer stands out in the corner of the FUNNYFISH Studio, a space filled with durable products based on creative ideas. The studio’s lighting products and watches, inspired by the Korean alphabet, are visually pleasant and capture the essence of Korea’s culture and sentiments. Among the studio’s products, the “Hangeul Bottle Opener,” selected as an outstanding work in 2017, is a innovative product that utilizes the formal beauty of the Korean alphabet. The products themselves resemble Korean words byeol, dal and kkot, each meaning star, moon and flower, and they literally become bottle openers. These products can stand on their own as art objects or as paperweights as well. The romantic imagery of the words changes the atmosphere of a space, and the word-play is highly entertaining (in Korean, the word ‘ddada,’ meaning ‘to open,’ is used for various phrases such as ‘grabbing a star,’ ‘asking for the moon,’ and ‘picking a flower). When Chinese President Xi Jinping visited South Korea, the Blue House presented him with this bottle opener as an official gift. Aside from its line of innovative works, FUNNYFISH is developing many other Korean cultural products including the Lee Cheol-soo woodprint.
