Overview

The Korean word doya means a ceramics field. The ceramics field in Ulwang, Gyeonggi Province is a place teeming with nature, with a view of the Wangsong Lake. The DoYA Studio runs a vegetable garden and a farm in this field. Two artists work at the studio, Kim Se-hyun and Seon Ui-mi. Kim employs traditional make-up techniques in order to e xpress various colors and textures, adding his unique artisan touch to standard white porcelains. His main working tools consist of various brushes and engobe of different colors. By intersecting various primary colors, Kim creates a uniquely modern color and texture in his works. In particular, his “snowy series” creates a unique visual effects of floating snow. The tactile quality and painterly ornaments of his works stand out each time one looks at them. Moreover, the interior of his cups are covered in immediate whiteness, a tabula rasa that contrasts with the cups’ exterior. The cup’s floors are much smoother than regular ones as they have been polished with diamond paper.
