Overview

Developing an interest in the aesthetics and values of Korean traditional design during her studies of arts and crafts in the United States, Kim Seung-hee directed her attention towards traditional ornaments and accessories so that she can raise awareness on a lesser known side of Korean traditional culture. Korean rings consist of a set of two rings, but not many people know that what we often call a ‘ring’ is only a half of the product. South Korean culture of wearing two rings is unique and has a deep cultural significance, reflecting the prosperity of family, the harmony of yin and yang, promises, and other various narratives and meanings. Following her desire to reflect these traditional elements in a modern design, Kim has released two design series, the “Ssang Garakji.” The former consists of matte silver rings and a band that wraps around them, all supported by a simple design that caters to people of all ages. The latter, the “Single Band Blackstone Ssang Garakji,” sets up a contrast between silver and blackstone, creating a sophistication that highlights the modern aesthetic of the design. All of the products reflect detailed handiwork, the artisan shaping the rings and tying them together with a single band. As time passes by, the rings take on different colors, allowing users to appreciate the craftsmanship behind the rings. Moreover, the rings are comparably affordable as they make use of different kinds of stones; their unique design also appeals to a large population of a wide age spectrum. Traditional form, cultural significance, and a modern design all come together in these rings, which is suitable as a gift as well.
