Overview
Many people wear jewelry and ornaments; they also present them as gifts to others. Harboring a desire to cater to such people and promote the value of jewelry and ornament cases, the ceramic artist Yu Ari made a handmade porcelain jewelry case, something that is starkly different from factory-made plastic or metal cases. After several trials and errors, Yu succeeded in creating a porcelain case with a lid. The warm physical property of porcelain and its durability make Yu’s jewelry case incredibly refined. Although Korean porcelain usually evokes blue and white colors, Yu’s works employ vibrant colors such as red and blue and even gold for ornaments. By employing geometrical dots and lines and bringing out uniquely Korean colors and styles, Yu succeeds in capturing both simplicity and function with her design. Yu’s jewelry cases can be used separately, but they can also be used in combinations as well. She uses a casting technique that pours mud over a plaster cast and applies an intricate painting on the exterior part afterwards. A high level of concentration, care, and patience are required for the works to have a consistency between the interior and the exterior and also to boast their shapes, colors, and ornamentations. Despite the high demands put upon her, Yu endures the arduous process of making her jewelry cases because she firmly believes that only hard work enables one to truly enjoy the creation process and gives birth to precious works.
